Building modern infrastructure for culture, community, and connection
Founded: 2016
Initial Valor Investment: Angel Fund (first institutional capital) 2017
Category: Membership platform, cultural infrastructure, community-driven media & spaces
Why Valor Invested
Valor was the first venture capital firm to invest in The Gathering Spot—backing the company before it was an obvious success, before national headlines, and before cultural capital followed financial capital.
We invested because we saw something rare: founders building infrastructure for community, not a trend. At a moment when social trust, professional networks, and cultural spaces were fragmenting, The Gathering Spot was creating a modern, intentional medium for connection—rooted in belonging, access, and shared ambition.
As Atlanta-based investors, Valor also recognized something deeply local and deeply scalable: Atlanta’s long history of shaping American culture through institutions that blend leadership, creativity, and civic responsibility. TGS wasn’t just opening a space—it was formalizing a platform where culture, capital, and opportunity could reliably intersect.
As Lisa Calhoun, GP of Valor Ventures, noted at the time:
“Atlanta has a distinct history of driving cultural transformation. Valor invested in The Gathering Spot’s early success in creating a modern cultural medium. We’re excited about investing to fuel their continued growth in the digital as well as physical realm.”
What The Gathering Spot Does
The Gathering Spot is a private membership platform that brings together professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders in thoughtfully designed physical spaces—supported by programming, partnerships, and digital community.
What began as a single Atlanta location when Valor invested, has evolved into a multi-city, multi-format ecosystem, including:
Flagship membership clubs in Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles
Retreat by The Gathering Spot, a wellness-focused rooftop and restorative space in Atlanta
A growing national membership community across New York, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Charlotte, and beyond
Workspaces, studios, and event venues that function as engines for collaboration, creativity, and enterprise
TGS is intentionally more than a social club. It is a platform for outcomes—where businesses are launched, careers are advanced, capital is introduced, and culture is shaped in real time.
Founder-Led, Mission-Driven
Founded by Ryan Wilson and TK Petersen, The Gathering Spot was born from a simple but powerful insight: community does not happen by accident—it must be designed, protected, and stewarded.
Wilson’s leadership blends operator discipline with cultural stewardship. Under his guidance, TGS has remained deeply values-driven while scaling nationally—demonstrating that purpose and performance are not trade-offs.
This clarity of mission has shown up in moments that matter:
Only 3% member attrition during COVID, when TGS opened its doors as a Safe House for community members in need
Rapid mobilization during civic crises, workforce displacement, and public emergencies
Programming that addresses hard conversations directly—without performative neutrality
Momentum Since Valor’s Early Investment
Since Valor invested as the first VC capital, The Gathering Spot has grown from a single location into a nationally recognized cultural institution:
National partnerships: Including a 2024–2025 partnership with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s UATL, delivering co-branded events, digital access for thousands of members, and funded junior memberships for HBCU students at Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta.
Major capital raise: Since Valor invested, TGS has attracted a $30M round backed by leaders across sports, music, film, and business—signaling deep cultural and financial conviction in TGS’s model.
Proven impact: Initiatives such as 300 Strong (supporting Black women displaced from the workforce) and Side for a Side (addressing food insecurity following SNAP benefit cuts) demonstrate TGS’s ability to translate community into action.
From Vice President Kamala Harris to Ambassador Andrew Young, from entrepreneurs to artists, TGS has become a trusted convening ground where influence feels human and access feels earned.
Why It Matters
The Gathering Spot is not a moment—it is infrastructure.
In an era defined by isolation, polarization, and transactional networks, TGS proves that intentional community can scale—without losing soul, trust, or relevance. It operates at the intersection of culture, commerce, and civic life, creating compounding value for its members and the cities it serves.
For Valor, The Gathering Spot represents what we aim to back early: founders with courage, companies that expand access, and platforms that reshape how people connect, lead, and build.
